Discussion So I understand that Asriel turns back into Flowey because he needs the power of the souls to maintain his real form. What I don't get is why he couldn't keep one or more of the human souls so he could stay as himself. He says he can't keep all the souls inside of him, but then he adds, "The least I can do is return them."

If Flowey can't feel compassion without a SOUL, he can't have hope either but he does have hope so he's just missing the other fragments. This further solidified my theory that Flowey has a fragment of his SOUL. He does not have compassion but unfortunately, he still had hope to keep him going.

colekern • 6 yr. ago It's too hard to say, but I would personally think yes. Six souls turned him into Omega flowey. I would imagine that he needed seven souls to control what form he turned into. However, many of the fanworks that portray him only needing one soul do so within the bounds of canon.

Flowey has no soul. He has the essence of Asriel's soul, but lacks a proper soul. but why would the ashes of Asriel make Flowey be Asriel? The reason is explained in the Snowdin library. It is said that if a monster's dust is spread across something, their essence will live on in that thing. They do this with monster funerals.
